Graduate Programs
What makes a program unique?
Innovative faculty at the cutting edge of research, theory, and practice who bring new approaches to the classroom, advancing the scope of education and the possibilities of the profession. Within this environment, ideas are generated and questions are asked. Visions are tested, developed. A reciprocal exchange of solid architectural experience and revolutionary approaches result in visionary solutions to big questions and a student experience that takes idea into action.
What is the forward edge of culture and design?
The architects of tomorrow are faced with an ever-advancing palette of technological tools to realize their designs and an ever-broadening scope of influence to which we can apply them. Minnesota has been a leader within these advancements, integrating emerging tools and processes into the design studio setting and testing their roles in education and practice.
Why is architecture a social act?
Architecture has the potential to be both an expression of a community as well as an influential shaper of the relations and welfare of that very community. We approach our curriculum with the conviction that architecture is in service to the communities for which we design, and we instill a habit of engagement in our students throughout their education. Early core coursework integrates service learning, and the tradition continues by providing diverse opportunities to contribute both locally and globally.
What strengthens the discipline of architecture?
A strong foundation in the realities, tools and ethics of contemporary practice, with the additional insight and creativity to be able to re-envision the traditions and solutions of established practice. We ground our program in the foundational knowledge of building technology, construction, and materials, but expand and elevate the discourse to engage the wide range of scales, social/human dimensions, technical, and philosophical issues that comprise the role of design... embracing a future where design plays an expanding and unfamiliar role.
How can we steward the future we want?
Architecture bears responsibility to improve the built environment. As a profession whose physical product impacts environments, markets, and communities, locally and globally, we believe it is imperative to imbue the ethics and principles of sustainability within all facets of a design education... the result is a design process that engages the challenges and responsibilities of our age.
Currently, the School of Architecture offers three different graduate programs.
